6 Unexpected Surprises From Oscars 2014 Nominations
2. Jonah Hill Receives Best Supporting Actor Nomination
For those who have seen and loved The Wolf of Wall Street, one thing was undeniably clear: while Leonardo DiCaprio put forth the greatest performance of his career, Jonah Hill was just as good. He sunk his pearly white teeth right into his role and you could easily feel the potent chemistry between both Hill and DiCaprio. They each fed off each other. Hill's improvisational nature helped DiCaprio go to places he had never been to before as an actor. While Jonah Hill had once again displayed what an immense talent he is by showing the extent of his capabilities as an actor. He previously showcased promise with his Oscar-nominated role in Moneyball, but this was on an entirely different level. That being said, it had always seemed like a longshot for Hill to actually get an Oscar nomination. The Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globes had pretty much ignored him. Daniel Bruhl and James Gandolfini were expected to be nominated, but they wound up being passed over for Hill. And honestly? You really can't blame them for going with Hill, although now we will have to start calling Jonah Hill a "two-time Oscar nominee." Sounds weird, no? Wolf of Wall Street received a very strong showing overall, which is also surprising because there were reports that the Academy responded negatively towards the film when the movie was first screened. People expected Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio to miss out in their respective categories too, but they were much more likely to be nominated than Jonah Hill. Either way, it's great to see the Academy come around to the film even though its lack of editing nomination keeps it from being a Best Picture frontrunner.
