6 Unexpected Surprises From Oscars 2014 Nominations
3. Sally Hawkins Receives Best Supporting Actress Nomination
When Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine was first being screened to critics, the buzz surrounding Cate Blanchett's performance was impossible to ignore. As it is, she will most likely win the Oscar for Best Actress. It seems like a no-brainer at this point. But Sally Hawkins also delivered a great performance in the film, as she managed to hold her own incredibly well, playing Blanchett's sister in the movie. Hawkins had already been ignored by the Academy five years ago when she charmed critics and audiences in the 2008 film Happy-Go-Lucky. She had a lot more buzz for that role and even won a Golden Globe for it. So, it was deemed likely that she would be overlooked yet again, especially when Oprah Winfrey was in the running for the same category. Luckily, Sally Hawkins managed to take Oprah Winfrey down as she nabs her first ever Oscar nomination. Perhaps the trick to finally receiving a nomination was to work with Woody Allen. Hawkins will be the ninth actress, from a Woody Allen film to receive a Best Supporting Actress nomination. Of those nine, Dianne Wiest, Mira Sorvino, and Penelope Cruz have each gone on to win in the category (with Wiest winning twice).
