6. James Bond Is Ian Fleming
There is much debate surrounding the character of Bond and who he was originally based upon. Some have theorised that 007 is a fictionalised version of real-life MI6 agent Bill Dunderdale, a close friend of author Ian Fleming's, and notable for his love of fast cars and easy women. Others, however, believe the character to be based on World War Two spy William Stephenson. But the most realistic, and arguably most exciting theory, however, is that James Bond is actually based on the author himself. Fleming and Bond share a series of notable traits, not least of which that they were both globe-trotting adventurers who served as Commanders in the British Navy. They smoked the same cigarettes, preferred to drink coffee over tea, and it's been said that they even shared the same taste in exotic women. The author had once said that he wanted Bond to remain an "anonymous" sort of character, perhaps so that any reader could relate to him and live his adventures vicariously. Was Fleming in fact doing the same thing?
