2. Luke Skywalker
As Seen In... The
Star Wars Movies (1977-1983) It's tough being Luke Skywalker when your best friend is Han Solo. I mean, imagine these two on a night out in Coruscant: I think we all know who the sexy alien ladies are going to set their sights on, don't we? The only thing that really gives Luke an edge is the fact that he's got a lightsaber, and even Han is apparently capable of wielding that thing (see: Tauntaun makeshift bed scene in
Empire Strikes Back). That's to say, I don't think Luke Skywalker is a particularly interesting movie hero. Despite the fact that he does of lot of good things, we never really... well, we never really
like him, do we? He never says anything funny. He never makes us go, "Oh, good point, Luke." He doesn't even seem particularly intelligent. And yet he's not cocky enough to be "cocky", or "dumb" enough to be "dumb" - he's just Luke. Some kid. What do we know about him, save for his pre-ordained destiny, and the fact that he doesn't want to work on a Moisture Farm? What I'm saying is, we never really get a sense of his character. With Leia, we know she's tough and serious, but beneath the surface she's hiding affection for Han. There's some character - something we, as an audience, can find interesting. Luke acts like an extra who's been told to react to things the best he can, courtesy of other, better movie characters. How is it that R2-D2 is more appealing than Luke Skywalker? Why do I feel like R2-D2 has a more rounded personality, despite the fact he never says a word, and isn't even a "he" at all?
Boring, that's why.
