7 Big Questions About The Deadpool Film

5. The Whole Rights Issue

Any observer to the comic book genre of movies would have seen the bitter disputes between character rights; this debacle will give us two versions of Quicksilver, and means that the Marvel Cinematic Universe are unable to use the word €˜mutant,€™ opting for €˜miracles€™ instead. This small example shows exactly how careful studios must be to ensure that they comply with Marvel€™s confusing array of rights. So why is this relevant to Deadpool? He will be in a 20th Century Fox film, meaning that he will be able to reference any character in their catalogue. This is a fairly extensive list, seeing as it contains anyone primarily linked to the X-Men and Fantastic Four comics. However, this also means that the Merc with a Mouth will not be allowed to so much as allude to Marvel€™s other creations. Deadpool competes with Thanos for a romance with Death, a lady so elusive that neither character can be with, yet the whole rights issues will render this interesting story unusable. In the mid-credit scene of The Avengers Thanos reacts to the idea of tempting Death, so it is arguable that Marvel already has plans for Thanos€™ love. This would end Fox€™s chances of using her as a love interest for Wade Wilson. As we noted earlier, a 12A rating would not necessarily limit the ability of the film to remain faithful to the comic book, but this legal and rights issue has the capability of seriously hindering the movie. This may not have a major implication on the film, but studios know that these characters are most profitable in a franchise, so it is reasonable to assume that we will see multiple incarnations of the psychopathic mercenary. Could this rights restriction limit Deadpool€™s ability to talk, and would this impact the character?
