7 Biggest Paychecks Actors Made For NOT Playing A Character

2. Kiefer Sutherland - Renegades

Having met while filming slightly bonkers sci-fi yarn Flatliners in 1991, stars Kiefer Sutherland and Julia Roberts embarked on a whirlwind romance, culminating in an engagement and planned wedding on 20th Century's Fox's studio lot. But these Hollywood darlings didn't get their happy ending, with Roberts calling the wedding off three days before the big day - the ensuing media furor cited Sutherland's reported adventures with a stripper and Roberts' close relationship with fellow thesp, Jason Patric, as the death knell - signalling the end of this union. But that wasn't all that ended as it soon emerged that, unsurprisingly, the next flick Sutherland and Roberts had planned to do with each other had also been given the heave ho. Details on Rengades' plot are scant, but the film was set to be produced by Carolco Pictures and Roberts would have featured in a role that saw her playing an American Indian in presumably the old west. It's also safe to assume that Sutherland would have rolled out his lovable Young Guns cowboy schtick in a gunslinger role. Sutherland was reportedly handed $3 million dollars to leave the project while Roberts stayed on board, with Caroloco rumoured to be waiting to ensnare Mel Gibson or even Jason Patric in the vacant opposing role. This soon proved fruitless and the project remains in the catacombs of development hell.
