Although The Dark Knight Rises is more divisive than either Batman Begins or The Dark Knight, it does succeed in closing out The Dark Knight Trilogy, even giving Bruce Wayne a happy ending with Selina Kyle.

After that, though, we head back to Gotham and find John 'Robin' Blake inheriting the Batcave, while hearing that Batman is now supposed to be more of an idea than just one person; a mantle that someone else can pick up.

Had Warner Bros. wanted to continue the franchise, then there was a clear way to continue things, with Joseph Gordan Levitt taking on the role, while the ending suggests it would've explored the notion of what Batman really means and who can actually become him.
