7 Creepy Lighthouses Featured In Horror Films

3. Battle Royale

The Lighthouse
Toei Company

Another fairly small lighthouse-cameo, but one that definitely deserves a spot on this list.

As class 3-B are thrown into a forced battle royale, their true colours are shown. We see who decides to wait it out, who decides to kill, and who will take their own lives.

One group of girls, deciding to ignore the fact that they are going to be killed the next day, decide to create a sanctuary in a lighthouse.

Symbolically, lighthouses represent both safety and danger. They are a beacon of light in the darkness, yet they also warn of the death that lies in the rocky coast.

In Battle Royale, the lighthouse is a bright, bleached white that contrasts with the bloody gore the viewer has been readily exposed to up to this point. Inside, the girls have created a safe haven – cooking spaghetti and having a good time like they’re on a teen holiday rather than a fight to the death.

However, when one of the girls drops dead from an accidental poisoning, it takes less than two minutes for the group of friends to fall apart and massacre each other.

The location of a lighthouse for this scene is poignant, because it shows how quickly safety can turn to danger, and that in a battle royale, no one gets out alive

Well, almost no one.
