1. Lex Luthor
Ah, Lex Luthor. Superman's arch-enemy has gone through a lot over the years, but remains one of DC's greatest characters, villain or otherwise. He not only goes up against the Last Son of Krypton, but is often a nemesis for the entire Justice League. The greatest thing about Lex, besides his wealth and near metahuman intelligence, is the fact that he truly believes that the world would be better without Superman. He doesn't see his actions as evil, and believes himself to be the savior of humanity. That kind of megalomaniacal dedication and self-obsession makes him an even more formidable opponent than some of the DCU's more powerful bad guys. As far as how to give the supervillain his own animated film, I recommend adapting Brian Azzarello's magnificent graphic novel, Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. The 5-part miniseries (which was later collected into a single graphic novel and simply retitled to 'Luthor') presents Lex as a hero of the people. He's well liked, and instead of being the over-the-top, cackling mastermind he's often portrayed as, he's more of a shrewd, brilliant businessman. The book is told from Lex's point of view and is the best breakdown of why he hates Superman. In short, he believes that Superman presents the human race with no need to better themselves. With Superman around, there's no point in trying to evolve any further because you'll never be as good as him. We don't see much of Superman in the story, and when we do it's either a blue and red blur in the sky, or he's cloaked in shadow so that only his menacing, red-glowing eyes are visible, creating an image of the hero we've never quite seen before: the image that Lex sees, rather than the bright, handsome, hopeful being we see him as. It's an excellent book and definitely worth checking out. It would also make for a great animated film and give people a look into the mind of one of DC's greatest characters, while teaching audiences something new and interesting about a character that has become an icon. And there we have it! My list of 7 DC villains who deserve their own animated films. There are, of course, countless of other foes in the pages of DC comics that could get the similar treatment, so let us know how you liked this list and what character you would like to see in the comments below!
