7 Harry Potter Characters Who Were ALMOST Sorted Into A Different House
3. Peter Pettigrew
The Sorting Hat made a serious mistake when it sorted Peter Pettigrew into Gryffindor. He was one of the most cowardly individuals in the entire series and he never did anything that could be described as brave.
It took over five minutes for the Hat to make a decision, as it was unable to choose between Gryffindor and Slytherin. But why did the Hat think Pettigrew would be suitable for Gryffindor in the first place? Sure, it’s possible Pettigrew was braver at the age of eleven than he was in later life, but this has never been confirmed.
What’s more, if the Hat hadn’t sorted Pettigrew into Gryffindor, he probably would never have become friends with James, and as a result, he wouldn’t have been able to betray him to Voldemort.
Whilst the Hat had no way of knowing the consequences of putting Pettigrew in Gryffindor, this still doesn’t explain why he wasn’t sorted into Slytherin at once.
