If you feel like the ground is shaking beneath your feet, you better get off the sand quickly and run towards firmer terrains. That is if you were to live in the world of the Tremors franchise, a place where the secure feeling of standing is stripped away as a mechanism to infuse uncertainty in the mind of the viewer.

Just picture it for a second: you’re just standing there, when suddenly an enormous beak attached to a bulbous swollen belly emerges from the floor to claim you as its next meal.

The grotesque sandworms known as Graboids are not capable of complex interactions with their surroundings, yet they have evolved to become sophisticated killers that can even set rudimentary traps for their potential prey. They’re also capable of detecting the heat signatures of warmblooded mammals, such as careless humans that wander into the desert.
