7 Horror Movie Prequels That Need To Happen
5. Martyres
Martyrs is a movie that has its entire meaning transformed in the final scene. A film that is really more about the punch-line (or gut-punch) climax than the ninety minutes that proceeded it. However, if you scratch beneath the surface there are some genuinely interesting places a prequel could go that don't necessarily have to focus on the ending's reach for a deeper meaning.
One such idea could explore the seemingly idyllic, complicit, family that live in the house above the horrendous torture chambers below. Who are they? And why do they choose to live and raise their children above the horror beneath them? How much do their children and wider family know about the whole operation?
Or a prequel could even focus on the cult-like organisation as a whole. How did the inhumane search for proof of the afterlife begin? What happened to all the other victims? It's mentioned to protagonist Luce that the reason she originally escaped as a child was because "they were less organised". So just how did such cruelty come to be so organised?
