For fans of James Wan's filmography, you'll have spotted a consistent figure lurking in the background of almost all of his horror movies - the rosy-cheeked, tricycle riding nightmare that is Billy the Puppet. Originally appearing in Saw as a cover for the Jigsaw killer's communication with his captives, Billy has since appeared in Dead Silence amongst a room of other dolls in the background, as well as appearing in drawn form on a blackboard in Insidious.

Interestingly, the co-creator of the Saw franchise and director of Upgrade also included a graffiti style reference to Billy in one of his abandoned corridors, and if we take a look at Death Sentence, there's another Billy mural painted in an alleyway as a character has a phone conversation nearby.

The reach of the Jigsaw killer is well documented in the Saw series, with his notoriety an important part of the police investigation into his crime spree - so could it be that all these movies take place in the same universe, where everyone is aware of Jigsaw's influence to the point that he's become a pop culture figure and art inspiration to the masses?

Yes, it's a stretch, but considering James Wan's tendencies towards shared horror universes with The Conjuring, and his use of personal stories rather than worldwide events, it's more than possible that we're witnessing a world that houses all of these films under one spooky umbrella.
