7 Huge Upcoming Movies (That Are Massive Gambles)
3. Robin Hood
Reported budget: unconfirmed
Release Date: 21st November 2018
Just to reiterate, we're still rooting for most of the films on this list to succeed. Some of them represent risks that really deserve to pay off. But in this instance, it's hard not to do a full-on facepalm and wonder what the hell anyone involved is thinking.
Does anyone actually want to see another Robin Hood movie? Anyone? In particular, a Robin Hood movie which revisits the character's origins and gives them a vaguely contemporary twist? Has there been a single film in recent years which has ventured into similar territory and come out smelling of roses?
We all like Taron Egerton in the Kingsman movies, but he's not quite a blockbuster-opening name in his own right just yet, particularly given it's a film like this.
After all, plenty of us like Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law, but that didn't save 2017's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword ($175 million budget, $145 million box office worldwide). Likewise, we all love Hugh Jackman, but that wasn't enough to drag us to see 2015's Pan ($150 million budget, $128 million global haul).
Sure, Robin Hood might have some impressive supporting players with Jamie Foxx as Little John, and current big screen bad guy extraordinaire Ben Mendelsohn as the Sheriff of Nottingham - but will that really be enough to lure a big enough audience to something so tired and over-familiar?
