7 Man Of Steel Criticisms Which Were Completely Unfair

2. Zod's Death

SUPERMAN DOES NOT KILL!!! You may have seen this plastered all over the internet following Man Of Steel's release. Of course, Snyder and Co. would have been fully aware of how divisive this particular plot point would prove to be but perhaps they would hope that the fans would appreciate that this movie did not want to categorize everything as Good vs. Bad. Rather than an attempt to destroy the world just for the hell of it, Zod's plan was to rebuild his homeworld on ours, with an unfortunate side effect being the eradication of the entire human race. As an antagonist, he definitely ticks all the right boxes but his motives are not inherently evil, merely misguided. There are a number of reasons why this decision should be defended. Firstly, it could be argued that Superman has not killed, not a human anyway. Zod and his henchmen were the remains of a lost civilisation of aliens and Superman was simply finishing the job. Ok you need to suspend a little disbelief but in a movie where a guy can fly that shouldn't be so hard. Secondly, Snyder may be setting up Superman's 'no kill' mentality here. We saw how deeply it affected him making this is a much more realistic motivator and in keeping with the tone of the movie.
