1. Sean Bean As Odysseus In Troy
Legends are often difficult to bring back to life and Troy found this to its cost when it attempted to retell Homer's the Iliad. In fact, it seems like a movie written by a committee For a start, the Iliad is a story that involves Gods granting certain heroes their patronage and protection. It was obviously thought that this would be too complex to retell in a modern film interpretation so instead the film is more an ancient war movie. But then apparently you have to have the Gods to some degree, so you have some weird scene with Achilles' mother as well as hints that apparently the Trojans worship Apollo. But since the Gods aren't seen to do anything, it does make the Trojans seem like a rather foolish lot compared to the (seemingly) much more secular Greeks. And this is all before the fact that Paris and Helen seem less like star-crossed lovers and more like narcissistic fools, Achilles is a selfish moron and King Priam of Troy is a old man who won't listen to his son's military genius. Having said all that, Sean Bean is a brilliant Odysseus. He epitomises everything that the great Greek hero seems to represent, including cunning, leadership, diplomacy and pragmatism. It's a shame the movie seems to fall apart around him. So that's what I think. What do you think? feel free to comment!
