7 Most Disappointing MCU Movies (So Far)
4. Captain Marvel
To be totally fair to Captain Marvel, it had an enormous weight of expectations laid upon it, being the MCU's first (and very belated) female-led superhero film.
But even accepting that, it's rather disappointing that the origin story for the MCU's most powerful Avenger - that's in Kevin Feige's own words, by the way - is just a decent, unremarkable movie.
Captain Marvel should've been the MCU's Wonder Woman: a lush, heart-on-sleeve feminist battle cry which upended expectations and made everyone fall in love with the character.
But from the flat direction to the just-OK script and mixed visuals, it failed to give Brie Larson the barnstorming material she deserved.
Larson at least made for a fine pairing with Samuel L. Jackson, and Ben Mendelsohn gave a typically entertaining performance in the antagonist role, but overall it felt far more typical and familiar than just about anybody wanted it to.
Perhaps back in Phase One a film this formulaic wouldn't invite so much indifference, but 21 movies in, they really should be trying harder than this, especially with a hero so presumably pivotal to the outcome of Avengers: Endgame.
