4. Aunt May (Marisa Tomei)

Aunt May is set to be introduced in Civil War, before the standalone Spider-Man film in 2017, and she's going to be looking a little bit different to what we're used to seeing on screen. While it was the then 74-year-old Rosemary Harris who played Peter Parker's widowed aunt in the 2002 film, and 66-year-old Sally Field in The Amazing Spider-Man, it'll be Marisa Tomei who's playing the character this time around. This caused something of a backlash online when the news was first revealed, because at 50 some people believe she's too young to play the often elderly Aunt May. Hmm... This new take on Peter Parker places the character in high-school, so having May as someone around the age of Tomei, rather than a woman in her 70s, actually makes a lot more sense. Yes, Tomei is an attractive woman (for her or any age), and that's not generally how Aunt May is presented, but using that argument completely overlooks a couple of things: 1) that a woman of 50 or over getting what should be a sizeable role in a major blockbuster is something to celebrate (although it shouldn't have to be), and 2) Tomei is a fantastic actress, having won one Oscar and received a further two nominations. Forget the age, forget the appearance, it's going to be exciting what she brings to the role, and fun to see a different Aunt May, especially without having to go through Uncle Ben's death again.
