7 Most Overlooked Final Girls In Horror Movies
4. Ana (Sarah Polley) - Dawn Of The Dead (2004)
From the start, Ana demonstrates her resilience, not letting the shock of losing a loved one let her lose her own life. She's no unfeeling robot, though; the time for letting out her emotions comes a little later, when she's not having to avoid being eaten alive. Zombie apocalypses tend to provoke that course of action.
What makes here shine compared to her fellow survivors is the effect she has on them, particularly C.J. (Michael Kelly), who believably goes from actively hostile to newcomers, to sacrificing himself so others may live.
So often in life and film - and not just in horror films - empathy and vulnerability are portrayed as weaknesses. Ana is a nurse, and whilst that rather nicely gives her a role in the story, it also allows her to show her kindness and selflessness. She doesn't give up her vocation even as society collapses.
Perhaps it's her virtuousness that keeps her alive long enough to escape a horde of the ravenous undead on a yacht, a few others in tow. Ana is no doubt the leader by now. It's never formally decided aloud, but throughout the story everyone defers to her.
As the credits roll, she and her fellow survivors are attacked again after apparently finding refuge, and the audience is left in the dark as to their fate.
Ana spent her time helping others when didn't have to, putting herself at risk repeatedly, and someone who actively chooses to do good despite living through hell is to be admired.
