There really could only be one film to top this list, the brilliant opening episode of one of the greatest trilogies ever made. When the highest grossing film in history (Avengers: Endgame) finds itself quoting it ad nauseam, you know the film has had a major cultural impact.

The film gets the right mix of time travel elements here, with great pop culture references as well as a clever but not overly complicated exploration of the implications of time travel. Everything about the film is perfection, all set up with the brilliant and measured establishment of story arcs both big and small.

A retrospective viewing of this gem makes you appreciate the attention to detail, every minute detail a purposeful moment. Be it the mannerisms of George McFly, Mrs McFly's reflection of how she met the love of her life, the flyers being handed out to save the clocktower or Mayoral campaign posters, every plot point pays off big time by film's end.

The acting is first rate, Michael J. Fox bringing an energy and enthusiasm for the lead role of Marty McFly, which was all the more remarkable for the fact he was still filming episodes of Family Ties during the film's shoot.

Christopher Lloyd is the star of the show, bringing to life Doc Brown's eccentricity and hyperactive personality, while also displaying great depth and emotion. It's hard to fathom he wasn't nominated for a best supporting gig here, a massive oversight by the Academy.
