7 Reasons Ghostbusters: Afterlife Won't Revive The Franchise
1. Too Little Too Late
It can’t be overstated enough just how huge Ghostbusters was in the 80’s and 90’s. Even beyond the original movie, the franchise lived on through toys, collector’s items and animated TV shows. And whilst it does still have an incredibly devout fan base, maybe only second to Star Wars, its legacy and mythology has somewhat faded.
It has been 36 years since the original was released, and with its reputation tarnished, to an extent, by the sub-par reboot, it has a hell of a lot of ground to make up if it wants to create a buzz like it once had in the 80’s.
Judging by the lukewarm reception the trailer received, it doesn’t feel like Afterlife will be the movie to completely revive the franchise. Although to be fair, when something was as successful and as well received as the original movie was, even the best version of a Ghostbusters sequel in 2021 would have a hard time matching those heights.
The best we might have to hope for is an enjoyable, nostalgic romp that helps cleanse the bad taste left by the tonally awkward 2016 reboot. Even if Afterlife itself is forgotten about after a few years.
