7 Reasons The MCU Is Better Off Without Joss Whedon
6. The Quips Got Out Of Hand
Part of what makes the Marvel films click with audiences is
that they don't take themselves too seriously. The films have always done a
great job balancing the superhero action with moments of comedy.
Whedon really excelled at this with The Avengers. His signature quippy, pop-culture-filled dialogue worked surprisingly well when delivered by these iconic characters. He found the humor in all of the characters and it made for a genuinely hilarious film.
Sadly for the sequel, Whedon forgot that the humor should aid the story and instead put far too much focus on the jokes. It seems as though he was trying to out-do himself and crammed every scene with endless one-liners and superhero bantering. There were still quite a few funny bits but whereas the jokes in the first Avengers were true to the characters, this time everyone sounded like Tony Stark which got a little tiring.
Worst of all, he inexplicably decided to make Ultron, a villain with great potential, into a sarcastic, sassy nuisance for the Avengers. Marvel certainly has a history of bland baddies, but this was not the way to fix the problem.
Whedon can craft some great dialogue, there's no disputing that, but he can also get carried away with himself.
