7 Reasons The MCU Is Better Off Without Joss Whedon
5. New Filmmakers Can Stand On Their Own
Whedon services for the MCU didn’t stop at writing and
directing The Avengers films- he was also their secret weapon. Given his gift
for dialogue and long career as a Hollywood script doctor, Marvel had Whedon
work on several of the other of the universe’s films. He reportedly did
punch-ups to the scripts for Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor: The
Dark World, trying to add in some what made the Avengers so special.
It’s a smart move to put someone like Whedon in a consultant position, especially in the early days of the MCU while they were still trying to find the right voice for their films. The success of The Avengers gave them something to aim for and they hoped to replicate that success.
However, as the universe evolved, it became clear that the individual movies can feel different from one another. They began bringing in filmmakers like James Gunn and Shane Black to infuse their unique voices into the films.
Since that revelation, Marvel has made some really exciting choices when hiring filmmakers. No one could have anticipated that Taika Waititi would helm a Thor movie, or that Ryan Coogler would go from gritty indies to Black Panther. They’re bold choices but these filmmakers all have strong and unique voices of their own, and Marvel has learned enough to trust their filmmakers.
