7 Reasons The MCU Is Better Off Without Joss Whedon
4. He Doesn't Get All The Characters
Part of what made Whedon such a solid choice for the Avengers was his love of this world. Whedon is a massive comic book fan and brings that passion to many of the caharcters- but not all them.
While Whedon did a great job of bringing together all these characters, it seems he really only wants to focus on a few main ones and let the others fall by the wayside. He seems to enjoy the virtue of Captain America and has a real knack for writing dialogue for Tony Stark, but many of the other Avengers don’t get the same love. Despite being one of the main Marvel characters, Thor is given very little to do in Whedon’s films. And while he tried to make up for his handling of Hawkeye, it’s pretty clear he’s not too interested in the character.
When it comes to introducing new characters, Whedon also seems to have some trouble. As much as he insisted on including Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, he doesn’t have anything interesting for them to do and they’re sort of just there. The Vision is an interesting character but he’s introduced so late in the film we never really get a grasp on who he is.
Then there’s Whedon’s treatment of Black Widow in Age of Ultron. I don’t want to criticize too harshly here because Whedon has been beat up a lot on this issue and I don’t feel he made malicious intentions. The fact remains, however, that throwing your one female character into a pointless and out-of-nowhere romantic relationship just so she has something to do is misguided.
