The fact that X-Men: Dark Phoenix is the only Fox Marvel film whose release date was not somehow altered, is much more than a mere coincidence. In fact, it's fair to say the X-men characters' future very much depends on the relative success or failure of this film.

Following the lacklustre response to Apocalypse, Disney is sure to be watching this film closely, to see how well audiences embrace it.

One of the big questions amidst the Disney/Fox buyout has been whether or not Marvel will have any interest in keeping the established cast and continuity of the X-Men intact, or if they will simply start from scratch with a clean slate in the MCU. This film will absolutely be a huge factor in that decision, and if it is not an outright smash, you can expect Dark Phoenix to be the final gasp of the X-Men franchise as we know it.

Honestly, the casting of multiple actors to play the same parts across different generations has lead to a fairly convoluted continuity, and its one that Marvel would have to work hard to properly preserve. Thus, allowing the film a proper chance to stand on its own two feet, without having anything about it be altered by the Disney/Fox deal, even its release date, is a wise choice. It will allow Disney and Marvel the chance to better evaluate the situation, and decide how to best move forward from here.
