Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sailed the series into plothole-ridden waters by giving Jack Sparrow's compass its own backstory.

During a flashback sequence, viewers learn that the evil Captain Salazar was released from the Devil's Triangle because Johnny Depp's comically inept pirate "betrayed" the navigational instrument.

If that's accurate, Salazar should have been released from his prison several times over throughout the series because Jack's decision to trade the compass for rum wasn't the first time he parted ways with it for his own gains.

In Dead Man's Chest, he gives it to Elizabeth so she can find the titular McGuffin, and in At World's End he severs his loyalty to it by passing it to Will. Finally, in On Stranger Tides he gave the compass to Gibbs to help him find his way to freedom.

At least one of these three occasions Jack turned to compass over to somebody else should have granted Salazar his freedom.
