7 Scenes Introducing A Superhero That Completely Nailed It

2. Kick-Ass In Kick-Ass (2010)

The street beatdown set to Omen by the Prodigy is emblematic of the unique style of Kick-Ass - and a terrific introduction to the superhero. Intervening in a gang attack, Dave Lizewski soon finds out that being a superhero isn't as easy as it looks. This is one of the most hard-hitting fights in any superhero movie around. It's refreshingly real; Kick-Ass has no special powers to fall back on, so if he's going to get the better of his opponents (and he's taking on several gang members at once) he's going to have some work to do. The scene sets up the main thing that sets Kick-Ass apart from other similar movies - high stakes. Young Dave is in some real peril, getting beaten half to death, and it's completely believable. The appeal of Kick-Ass is that he's an underdog, and this scene certainly sets him up as that. The fact that a YouTube video of the fight propels Kick-Ass to stardom and the thumping soundtrack add to the unique feel that Kick-Ass had and that, unfortunately, its sequel couldn't quite replicate. However, the original persists as one of the best introductions to a superhero who is a real one-off.
