Mako: The Jaws of Death might well be the most creative entry on this list. Whilst the release date just one year after Spielberg's masterpiece suggests it was merely attempting to hop on the shark-mania bandwagon, Mako was creative by casting the titular breed of shark in a sympathetic light. The movie sees a man establish a psychic connection with sharks, telepathically directing them to feed on anyone he perceives as a danger to his fishy friends.

Mako really nails the grindhouse style it shoots for by making its deaths the key scenes worth noting. It also received critical praise for its underwater cinematography; the real-life footage of sharks biting straight down the lens is a shocking touch.

However, Mako promises a no-frills shooting style that didn't use effects at any point; this boast is plainly untrue as we see side by side the rubbery toys attached to hammy, screaming actors wildly flailing in open waters. What was genuinely innovative conflicts with what was achievable when the movie was created. Jaws himself might not always appear as realistic as he once did, but the film doesn't cut between naturalistic footage and the prosthetic predator, masking the illusion.
