7 Shark Films The Meg Will Blow Out Of The Water

3. Sharktopus

The Meg Sharknado
Syfy

Another mutant shark disaster-piece here, but at least the creators were inventive. It feels like writer Mike Maclean might've looked to Japanese Kaiju movie traditions here, trying to Westernise this with a genetically engineered apex predator that combines the apparent razor-sharp nature of octopus tentacles with the unending hunger of the great white shark.

A Syfy Channel staple, Sharktopus isn't quite as dreadful as some of the other movies on the list. It at least owns the fact it's shooting entirely for the crowd who adore terrible movies. It features a way overblown, action-heavy plot, shoddy CGI, and the most important part of a killer shark movie: grisly deaths.

Sharktopus' main crime was jumping on the bandwagon inspired by Sharknado's popularity. Despite the military detonating the explosives embedded in the brain of their genetically engineered weapon a la Suicide Squad, the series spawned two sequels; Sharktopus vs Pteracuda, and only a year later in 2015 Sharktopus vs Whalewolf. And no, those titles don't signal quality.

Sharktopus is catering to the lizard brain in all of us: when a teenager yells "Dude! That's awesome!" at an open-air performance because he enjoys the shark tearing into one of the performers, we identify with him. Sharktopus is competent, and not much else.
