7 Things James Gunn Has To Fix In Suicide Squad 2
4. Rewrite The Joker
This legendary DC character needs Gunn to do some serious retooling.
Jared Leto is a fantastic, Oscar-winning actor, but the Joker is not his best role. And that’s putting in mildly. Gunn is rumoured to have been greenlit for any recasts he sees fit, but the Joker raises some issues.
On one hand, it was an almost universally unpopular portrayal. On the other, criminal gangster Joker has potential, and Leto could very well excell given a second chance. Not to mention recasting him again would mean two new Jokers in the same year, with Joaquin Phoenix’s stand alone origin story due for release soon.
Damaged on the forehead was diabolical marketing. For a character known for elaborate schemes, superior intellect and violent unpredictability, the move felt wildly out of character. Any man who must say ‘I am the king’ is no true king, after all.
But it’s well within Gunn’s arsenal to right those wrongs. The Joker could be cut altogether, but ducking a challenge doesn’t seem Gunn’s style. Any doubters should check out his less well known comic adaption Super to see just how well the man blends realism with the deranged.
