7 Things James Gunn Has To Fix In Suicide Squad 2

Origin stories. They were great when the superhero genre was a relative newcomer to movie screens, but now the genre is quite clearly here to stay. A lot of fans would rather do away with them.
The aforementioned Phoenix’s Joker is an exception to the rule, as is Tom Hardy’s new release Venom, as these both centre entirely on origin. But a thirty minute chunk at the beginning of the movie dedicated to how the heroes became heroes (or villains became villains) often feels unnecessary.
The first Suicide Squad leaned heavily on Harley in jail for its marketing, but again, this scene was an exception rather than the rule. If it is a reboot of some kind, Gunn would be better going the Spider-Man: Homecoming route. We all knew the Spider-Man story; bitten by a spider, gets powers, Uncle Ben dies, yaddah-yaddah-yaddah. The Tom Holland movie sped through this, ditching Uncle Ben’s death entirely.
If Gunn wants to bring in an established character like Bane, he’d do well to follow this pattern. We know the score there too. Super strong, venom tubes, uncontrollable anger. We want more of these characters at their peak, and less of them climbing there.
