7 Times Fan Reaction Actually Changed Movies
2. Deadpool - The Movie Is Greenlit
The Initial Idea: In 2011, despite having a widely-praised script, an enjoyable cameo in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and a director attached, Fox passed on making a solo Deadpool movie, fearing it wouldn’t be profitable. In 2014, a scene of visual effects test footage leaked online from that scrapped film.
The Fan Reaction: The internet ate this footage up and it immediately went viral. Deadpool gained a ton of positive buzz and within weeks of the footage leaking, the long-gestating film finally had a release date of February 12, 2016.
Star Ryan Reynolds has straight up admitted that this leaked footage was the direct cause for the movie getting made. He even suggested that some of the people involved had long considered deliberately leaking it to provoke such a reaction, believing in the power of the fans to generate such an outcome.
After seeing all of these examples of negativity, both from fans unwilling to tolerate change and studios seemingly changing things just for the sake of doing so, it’s nice to actually see fans band together and creative a positive change for a movie.
