Because all the family soap opera nonsense isn't bad enough, another riotously awful subplot is thrown in there for good measure. Near the start of the movie, Blake meets Ben (Hugo Johnstone-Burt), a young Brit interviewing for a job in Blake's stepdad's (Ioan Gruffudd) company. The two establish a quick bond, and Blake heads off to her meeting. However, after another major tremor hits San Francisco moments later, Ben is suddenly madly in love with Blake, and rather than get him and his young brother Ollie (Art Parkinson) to safety, he decides to try and ensure Blake is safe. He ends up rescuing her from the car she's trapped in, and the three of them stick together for the rest of the movie, which feels overwhelmingly forced, all the more so when the two inevitably kiss near the end of the film. It's incredibly cringe-worthy and wildly unnecessary, again eating up screen time that would be better off not existing.
