7 Ups And 9 Downs From San Andreas

4. Ioan Gruffudd's Terrible "A**hole Stepdad" Character

This movie regurgitates one of the all-time terrible, cliched melodramatic plots from just about any action movie: the divorced action hero is clearly still in love with his ex-wife who, of course, has married a new guy, in this case Ioan Gruffudd's seemingly charming Daniel Riddick. He initially seems like a nice guy, trying to assure Blake that he's not attempting to muscle in on her and her father's relationship, though once she gets trapped in a car after a tremor, he runs for help, tells a security guard where she is and then scuppers off, making no further effort to save her. This absolutely seals his fate later in the movie, as when the freight tanker is thrown into the Golden Gate Bridge, Daniel is brutally crushed by a shipping container. If it weren't so groan-inducingly dull and familiar how this played out, it might've been kinda hilarious. Gruffudd has practically nothing to work with here: the character's horribly written, and there's not even much he can do to make audiences love to hate him. He's just...there, like furniture.
