76. Planet of the Apes (1968) - Franklin J. Schaffner
Planet of the Apes (1968) - Franklin J. SchaffnerAn astronaut crew crash lands on a planet in the distant future where intelligent talking apes are the dominant species, and humans are the oppressed and enslaved. Planet of the Apes follows astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) who finds himself and his crew stranded on a distant planet after their spaceship crash landed. In this world, Apes are the dominant species. They walk, talk and are intelligent. They take Taylor slave and are shocked when they find out he can speak and get quite afraid when they see he is intelligent. In this world, the roles have been reversed. Men shouldn't be able to talk, they are slaves. Planet of the Apes is one of the classic sci-fi movies of all time. It's intelligent, has a philisophical message, is entertaining and at times quite frightening. You can't discredit the costume and make-up effects that went into the Apes, they look so damn real and the military Apes would scare the hell out of me when I was younger. The movie is funny too with some memorable and genius quotes like Heston's unforgettable "Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!" or "All men look alike to most Apes". Great stuff! If you haven't seen this movie then go out and get yourself a copy, it's one of those must see films on the list. And it has one of the best endings in movie history.
