8 Actors Who Hated Working On Batman Movies
5. Alicia Silverstone - Batman & Robin
At 18 years old, Alicia Silverstone must not have believed her luck when she found out she would be playing Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin.
Even though the director's last Batflick, Batman Forever, hadn't quite hit home in the same way Tim Burton's previous two entries had, fans were still hopeful that his follow-up could deliver the goods.
Yet, in the end, Batman & Robin took Forever's colourful, cartoonish attitude and dialled it up to 11. This left fans walking away from the whole experience with a sour taste in their mouths... much like Silverstone.
When speaking about her time working on Schumacher's infamous picture, the actor said:
"I can’t say that it was that much fun. I love George Clooney, and I had such a good experience with him. He was so sweet to me, and kind. Really protected me and took care. Lovely. And I loved – I LOVED – Michael Gough, the man who played Alfred. He was a dream, and he and I had such a good relationship. I care about him so much. But, aside from that, it wasn’t like the deepest acting experience of my career. It’s more technical. It’s really more… a lot of it is really, ‘Look over there and throw something.’ Where am I looking? What am I looking at? What am I throwing? And that’s not really that inspiring. You know that I mean? … You have to put the suit on. The suit is so uncomfortable. And I was young! I don’t know. I wonder how I would feel now? But at 18, putting that suit on and not knowing what the heck I was doing, I can’t say it was that fun."
When you take into account Silverstone's uncomfortable and uninspiring overall experience on Batman & Robin, along with the actor being ridiculously fat-shamed by the media once the film hit cinema screens, it's no surprise the star wasn't exactly in a rush to return to the superhero world once her time as Batgirl was up.
