8 Actors Who Were Sued For Quitting Movies

3. Kim Basinger - Boxing Helena

Old Dogs John Travolta
Warner Brothers

In most of the examples on this list, the actors sued ended up comfortably affording their costs or getting away with settlements. Sadly, the same cannot be said for Kim Basinger, as this infamous example of a studio suing an actor resulted in her declaring bankruptcy. She ended up repealing and reducing her costs and did climb her way back to the top, but being sued for more than you're worth is a horrifying thought.

Boxing Helena is a pretty terrible film that centres on a surgeon who captures his neighbour and removes her limbs. It's a dark and peculiar film, and Basinger made the right choice by not appearing in it. Unfortunately, the verbal agreement she gave that said she would was deemed worthy enough to sue her after she backed out.

Basinger ended up being forced to pay $7.4 million for breach of contract (which she hadn't even officially signed) and an additional $1.5 million for acting in bad faith. She repealed, which allowed the expenses to be reduced to $3.8 million, but even that must have been an overwhelming blow to the bank account.
