8 Actors You Didn't Know Secretly Directed Films

7. Kevin Costner - Waterworld

Kevin Costner is no stranger to directing, especially during the nineties where he helmed some massive projects. Before Waterworld, he directed the Oscar winning Dances With Wolves, with frequent collaborator Kevin Reynolds helping him out. But rumor has it that the opposite happened with his following and most ambitious project, Waterworld.

Kevin Reynolds is the credited director, but stories abound about how Costner was not only the leading man, but also the one pulling the strings with both the directing and the story, as well as being just a nightmare to deal with in general. Which might explain why the whole film was one gigantic mess, considering it doesn't sound like Costner was offering help that wasn't asked for.

Either way, because of his meddling, the two had a massive falling out, ending with Reynolds either leaving the project entirely or being fired, depending on what source you consult. Costner then took over directing the film full time.

The two wouldn't collaborate on a project again until the mini-series Hatfields And McCoys in 2012, and Waterworld - while not a failure thanks to overseas box offices - would flop stateside. Maybe Costner should have left well enough alone.
