There are several confusing things about this movie. Mainly, how did a movie based off a 1930's comic strip get such good reviews, and how did it attract such highly praised filmmakers and actors? Case in point, Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman had just received his Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Rain Man, and he goes onto this project. And the most baffling part? It worked.
