The first director on our list to be making his feature debut. Robert Stromberg has worked on major releases over the past few years as a designer and special effects artist. With the likes of Avatar and Alice in Wonderland under his belt (two of the most financially successful films of all time), Stromberg has the experience to try his luck at the big job. It also can't hurt that filmmakers like Tim Burton, Sam Raimi and James Cameron employed the designer, so the least we can expect is a beautiful looking film. The cast is also pretty damn impressive. Angelina Jolie will portray the titular evil character, while Elle Fanning (Super 8), Sharlto Copley (District 9) and the new doctor himself Peter Capaldi will lend a fairly concrete supporting hand. The footage so far has been quite uneasy in its approach, as is only appropriate for such an iconic villain. It's dark, dank but not quite as dirty as one might have hoped for. Still, this is a Disney film for children with Angelina Jolie, so an R rated adaptation was probably scrapped fairly early on. Still, with the talent involved and promising early footage, there's quiet optimism for the feature's outcome.
As a pretty nerdy guy, I've loved film and television since I was a wee lad. Growing up in Ireland, The Den was the show to watch with it playing Batman The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation and everything in between. I have an MA in Radio and Television Production and have written for various sites, hope you enjoy my articles/lists for What Culture!
