3. Mysterio Is Deadlier By The Dozen! - The Amazing Spider-Man #198
It's fair to say that Mysterio has often been depicted as something of a joke character in recent years, but there've been plenty of occasions where the master of illusion has nearly succeeded when battling Spider-Man. One such occasion came in Amazing Spider-Man #198, where he endlessly torments the wall-crawler with a series of hypnotic illusions, and leaves him helplessly suspended above a rapidly filling body of water.
There've been plenty of occasions where Spider-Man has nearly been defeated by his villains - and even one or two where he actually has - but Mysterio hasn't fared particularly well in that regard. Here, however, he comes dangerously close to offing the web-slinger for good, with Peter having only just emerged from a trip to the hospital curtesy of Wilson Fisk.
The story concludes in the following issue, but it's a great two-parter and a fine example of how Mysterio can be such a brilliant nemesis when depicted in a certain light.
