8 Best Donald Glover Roles

4. Guava Island - Deni Maroon

Donald Glover Lando Calrissian
Amazon Studios

Guava Island was a passion project for Donald Glover, which is why when he got the opportunity to make it, he made sure it was so full of life and vitality.

The story follows Deni Maroon, a musician who is putting together a festival for the people of Guava and struggling against the economic pressures of consumer capitalism - with that consumerism and capitalism helpfully condensed into one character here called Red.

In his role, Glover really commits to being the free-spirited musician who breaks out into song at every opportunity. He uses the film to show off almost all of his talents at once, in a kind of showcase that you'd show somebody who had never heard of Donald Glover. The music, the acting, and the humour are all quintessential Donald Glover/Childish Gambino, and you can even feel Glover's own style of screenwriting that is so brilliantly on display in Atlanta, too.

Whilst some parts of the film feel like they are a little thematically mismatched, Glover's work is brilliant. If there was one thing that he has done which shows off everything this multi-talented man is about in one neat package, it is as Deni Marron in last year's Guava Island.
