Release: TBC

Though it will probably play out as a multi-part drama for the BBC, this project's slightly vague format announcement could mean it counts as a film and it's certainly eye-catching enough to be mentioned here.

The Barking Murders will see Stephen Merchant movee away from a comedy role to play serial killer Stephen Port, who murdered four young men after meeting them on Grindr in the UK between 2015 and 2015. He'll star alongside Sheridan Smith as the mother of Port's first victim, Anthony Walgate, as she struggles to uncover the truth amid a much-scrutinised and heavily flawed official police investigation.

It's an intriguing project for how compelling and awful the true story is, but also to see Merchant playing that sort of role - particularly after he was so good in his unexpected role in Logan. He met the announcement with a statement: “This is a story that can’t be ignored – how four young lives were lost and their families’ brave attempt to uncover what happened. This factual drama will shed light on their story, so it’s a privilege to be a part of telling it.”
