2. What About The Sinister Six? - The Amazing Spider-Man 2
At the start of 2014 Sony Pictures were probably feeling pretty good. They were hard at work on their sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man, the next instalment in their biggest franchise. It promised more action! More romance! More villains! More more more!
It was predicted to be a billion dollar smash, and lead to more sequels and spin-offs. Smash cut to a year later, where the movie was the lowest grossing entry in the series, and the planned follow-ups were shelved. The film was attacked by fans and critics alike for its patchy story, uneven tone and for the villain overload. And even worse for Sony, a group hacked into their emails, exposing a lot of embarrassing insider info.
Some studio heads rolled, and Sony finally agreed to share their toys with Marvel. A happy ending in a way, as it allowed Spidey to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But with Marvel all but certain to bring in a new actor for Peter Parker and ignore The Amazing Spider-Man movies altogether, that leaves a lot of plot points unresolved.
These include the Green Goblin setting up a team of super villains to go after Spidey, the identity of the mysterious man in the hat or what the story was with Peters scientist dad. These questions would surely have been answered in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, but the odds of that happening now are about the same as Tobey Maguire returning to the role.
