6. Creed - James Herbert

The late, great James Herbert remains one of horror's greatest minds, his books full of disturbing imagery, sinister monsters, vengeful ghosts and Hell. He's well known for his debut The Rats, and has written a wide range of novels from the haunted house epic The Secrets of Crickley Hall and this list's pick, the bizarre, dark and delightfully horrible Creed.

In the novel, we follow Joseph Creed, a paparazzo without morals or conscience who will do anything to get the perfect shot of a celebrity. After attending the funeral of a world famous actress called Lily Neverless, where he takes pictures of a load of real-life famous faces, Creed becomes entangled in a mystery involving vampires, a hidden killer and people coming back from the dead.

It's a dark, hilarious, somehow light book with the feel of an '80s horror and a plot that is fast-paced and twisting at every corner. As a film, it would make for a surreal horror-comedy and has all the makings of a future cult favourite.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
