Over the years, teen fiction has often been the source of major movies and franchises, from The Maze Runner to The Hunger Games, from The Fault in Our Stars to The Hate U Give. Malorie Blackman's The Stuff of Nightmares is a horror novel, with teens in mind, which is full of on-screen potential thanks to its effective plot, unique structure and genuine terror.

After a train crash, a teenager searches the wreckage for his friends. But when he manages to find them, he ends up seeing their worst nightmare play out like a film, and must endure his friends' worst fear whilst he tries to subdue his own.

It's a simple but massively effective narrative which allows the book to never be stale and tell a wide range of short stories, from the downright horrific to the deeply moving. And in a world where all teen fiction films are related to the end of the world, dystopian futures and mental health (none of which are a bad thing), The Stuff of Nightmares might be a welcome change of pace.
