8 Box Office Implications From June 2016 Films
1. And The Also-Rans
As for the films that will likely fall by the wayside in June, ironically they’re probably the ones that arrived in May, i.e. Alice Through The Looking Glass and X-Men: Apocalypse.
Both films are relatively new in cinemas across the globe, both are underwhelming sequels and, crucially, both face so much new competition that they’ll struggle to attract much business in the weeks to come. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel will likely gobble up most of the children’s share of the market in the next week or so, while the wealth of new releases in assorted genres come the middle of the month will probably leave Alice and X-Men trailing behind. Way behind.
And then there’s Warcraft, and it’s tough to predict with any certainty how Duncan Jones’s long-awaited epic will fare. However, while the U.S. gross might end up a little underwhelming, there ought to be enough turnout from fantasy fans and the countless millions of Warcraft players worldwide to warrant a sequel. The film has also seen phenomenal advanced ticket sales in China, so much like Pacific Rim, Warcraft’s success will probably be measured internationally as much as anything.
As for Free State Of Jones, the Matthew McConaughey war film that opens on 24 June, a struggle to recoup its $65 million budget seems more likely than not.
