3. The Hobbit Was Almost Two (Awesome) Films
The Films You Know: So much criticism has been made about The Hobbit. Be it the decision to split the slight book in three or the severe over reliance on CGI, that a description almost doesn't feel necessary. We cant fully dismiss the series yet; a lot more is set to happen in the next two instalments and with editing still going on, Peter Jackson could end up being wise to his detractors. The trailer The Desolation Of Smaug released last week, however, cant help but leave us worried; does all that time spent on Legolas mean theres nothing of worth other than referencing the better trilogy?
The Films That Almost Happened: The second appearance from Middle Earth on this list, it comes higher not only because the films would have likely been more different, but better too. Adapting The Hobbit had been on Jacksons agenda since The Lord Of The Rings began, but once it became a possibility following that trilogy's success, he deciding to stick as producer to avoid competing with himself, giving the role to puppet maestro Guillermo del Toro. Development went on for a long time, with a new, unique look planned for two standalone films, but continued delays forced Del Toro out. Just the promise of different look, or of fewer films has us excited. Here's hoping Pacific Rim was worth it.
