The Alicia Vikander-led Tomb Raider (2018) may not have been the rip-roaring action-adventure homage to the original video games that everyone may have been hoping for, but it put in a good shift with some solid onscreen talent (Vikander, Walton Goggins, Derek Jacobi) and offered a fun and grounded approach that was only let down by its predictable storytelling.

As an origin story that concludes with the acquisition of Lara Croft's (Vikander) iconic pair of pistols, the stage was set for a potentially explosive second chapter. Misha Green was assigned to write and direct the sequel, shifting away from the down-to-earth but admittedly dry tone of the first film with some of the same supernatural spice she brought to Lovecraft Country (2020). This represented a promise to blend elements from the Legend and Shadow games, and incorporate in more monsters, mythical objects and shadow organisation Trinity.

Unfortunately, while Vikander was on board and Green had developed a script for the film, MGM failed to greenlight the sequel in 2022, lost the rights, and were bought out by Amazon. While there will indubitably be future Tomb Raider films from other studios, these will not be the sequel we were promised.
