8 Crazy Movie Sequels That Almost Happened That We Just Found Out About
5. The High Ground (Avatar)
Avatar: The Way Of Water (2022) premieres this month, a mere 13 years after the release of its predecessor, and a lot has changed since, including the premise, plot and story of the sequel itself.
Director James Cameron initially dropped out of the movie business for a while after the original Avatar took him on a global journey fighting for the rights and welfare of real-life indigenous people, and the question of whether the Avatar sequels were ever actually going to get made was up in the air for many years. Thus, in the interim he had plenty of time to think about what he wanted from the second entry, and his original script, The High Ground, wasn't it.
Featuring zero-gravity bow and arrow fights and other bombastic, technologically challenging sequences in an adventure that takes place farther from the core story of the first film, The High Ground would have been an Avatar sequel set between what are now the first two entries. Working with a team of writers, Cameron clobbered together a 130-page script that, while it didn't work for the series on screen, is nonetheless now being turned into a graphic novel.
